Your DPF is a ceramic trap that catches soot so the sky doesn't have to, burns that soot off during regens, and slowly fills with the ash that won't burn. Cleaning is real, periodic, and legitimate. It's also a favorite habitat of upsells โ so here's the whole picture, prices included.
Regens (passive on the highway, active when the truck injects extra heat, forced when a shop commands one) burn off soot โ the truck does this for itself, constantly. But regens can't touch ash: the incombustible residue from engine oil that accumulates for hundreds of thousands of miles until the filter's capacity shrinks like a furnace filter nobody changed. Cleaning removes ash. Regens remove soot. A shop that sells you a "cleaning" for a soot problem, or a forced regen for an ash problem, is treating the wrong disease โ sometimes ignorantly, sometimes not.
The working interval for most linehaul trucks: every 150,000โ300,000 miles, or roughly annually for high-mileage operations. Duty cycle moves the number a lot โ city/vocational trucks that never get hot highway miles load up much faster than a truck that cruises at operating temp all day. And the truck usually tells you before the calendar does:

The method matters: air-only cleaning knocks loose surface ash and is fine as a mid-cycle freshen-up; thermal cleaning bakes the filter for hours to render the deep ash removable, and it's what "DPF cleaning" should mean at proper intervals. A shop should also give you before/after flow numbers โ that's how you know the cleaning did anything, and a shop with real DPF equipment produces those numbers proudly.
And the third option that isn't one: the delete pitch lives in DPF conversations too, and it's the same trap covered in the DEF derate guide โ illegal, fine-heavy, resale-killing. The math never survives contact with an enforcement action.
The boring money-saver: ash is made of engine oil, so oil consumption and cheap oil accelerate the whole cycle. A truck that's easy on oil, run hot on the highway, cleans its own soot and slows its own ash clock โ which pushes the $400โ$700 service further apart, which is the cheapest DPF strategy there is.
A proper bake-and-clean typically runs several hundred dollars. A replacement filter runs thousands โ which is why 'just replace it' without measuring the filter first is a red flag.
Commonly somewhere in the 200,000โ400,000 mile range, but duty cycle rules everything: short hauls and heavy idling load a filter much faster than steady highway miles.
Two classics: pushing a new filter without weighing or flow-testing the old one, and charging for a 'cleaning' that was just a forced regen. Ask what method they use and what the before/after numbers were.
